Often our pets are our only constant companions, they have that special place in our heart which only an animal can reach in my eyes. I am surrounded by animals, be they pets from my family or my very own furry companions. This is wonderful in itself, but when it is time , and one of our companions is ready to leave this plane, it is the most soul destroying thing to go through.
It does not matter what species our pets are, be they furry, have feathers, or are cold blooded, what they mean to us, and what part of our hearts they occupy, it is just the same. The comfort we take from our pets is second to none, and when this all so familiar companion is no longer by our side, we feel a huge loss which can hardly be put into words. No, it is not just a cat, or dog, it is not just a silly hamster or rat, and no it is not just a duck who greets you every morning, a duck who is desperate to be let out to get to the pool for a daily swim, and no, it is not just a snake, or any reptile for that matter. No, it is a living breathing being, who managed to wiggle itself right deep into our souls. So yes, the grief is very very real, and often we cannot move forward, we cannot find the motivation to even get up in the morning, or even feed ourselves. So that is what is meant when we talk about Pet Bereavement. I am here if you need me to help you to decipher your emotions, and I am here to hold you tentatively within it.
